Moving to the Country? 10 Best Tips For Survival

Moving to the country and leaving the city behind can be a wonderful change of lifestyle.  If you are a city slicker about to make the move to the county, a reader who did it prepares you for the change.

  1. Buy a good pair of wellies.  You cannot move to the country and avoid mud.
  2. Get a decent waterproof coat for walks, popping to the village shop etc.  A full length one that reaches down past your wellington boots stops your trousers getting soaked.  I don’t know why you seem to get closer to the weather after moving to the country but it happens!
  3. Be more organised when you go shopping.  No more nipping to the shop next door to pick up those things you forgot at the supermarket.  If you have a good freezer you can keep frozen cartons of milk for when you run out on a Sunday evening before Monday’s breakfast.
  4. Get more warm clothes.  It is a surprise to find that is is a few degrees cooler in the country, especially in winter.
  5. When choosing flooring for your new country home, bear in mind that the outside always comes in with you and your visitors.  Be less fussy about spotless floors.
  6. Be more friendly to strangers.  Everyone you come across in the country will say “hello” or “good morning”.  This seems really odd if you have just moved from the city but in the countryside it is rude not to acknowledge people when you see them.
  7. Don’t forget a torch when you go out to the pub in the evening.  It might be daylight outside when you leave the house but it will be very dark when you return home.
  8. People who live in the country are very keen on having garden bonfires.  Keep a nose out when you have your washing hanging on the line.
  9. Have a plan for keeping warm or eating without electricity.  Even in well populated areas of the countryside, you are bound to to experience power cuts, even when there seems no particular reason for it.
  10. Don’t be put off by all of the above.  Moving to the country is absolutley wonderful and you would not catch me going back to the city now.
